One of the most famous houses in the county, for those of you who like history this house is full of it. Wilhelmine Bauer married Conrad Schuddenmagen in 1850 and this house was built in 1852 by her father and given as a wedding gift to her and her husband. Carl Siegismund Bauer (Wilhelmine's father) built his reputation with stone work, his daughter did it with her reputation as a competent nurse and her unusual gift of storytelling. She attracted all the nearby children to her home by holding them spellbound with her embellished stories. She also operated a variety store and had family members import lovely goods from Dresden to meet the needs of the plantation owners in this area. The stage coach would often stop at the house to bring her these items. When the driver crossed Cummins Creek at the edge of Round Top Farms he would blow his bugle and all the community would come running to the house to see what news, letters and goods he brought them. From the upstairs balcony, one can almost hear the bugle calling out. |
